Grey’s Anatomy season 22 episode 3 on ABC next week? First, it’s important to note that this installment’s title, “Between Two Lungs,” gives you an idea of what to expect and why Amelia takes a long break. Considering where we are in the story at this point, it seems like this will be one of those tales where the medical drama does take center stage. In the midst of all of this, will there likely be some character plots? Let’s just say that there is a good chance of that, but the pace may also slow down a bit. For several reasons, the premiere was always going to be extremely chaotic, and episode 2 truly deals with the fallout from all of this extreme stuff. Now, everything is subject to slight change, and we are quite eager to see what lies ahead.

There is a hidden reason behind Amelia’s decision to temporarily leave the hospital, as revealed in Grey’s Anatomy season 22, episode 2, “We Built This City.” Plot twists are common in ABC’s top medical drama, as they are in the majority of Shonda Rhimes’ works. Derek’s and George’s deaths were among the many unexpected deaths that Grey’s Anatomy has depicted over the years. In retrospect, Amelia was in a lose-lose situation. Though not romantically, she still loves Link. Her relationship with Natalie, meanwhile, had been erratic. In Grey’s Anatomy season 22, episode 2, Amelia decides to take a break because the entire dilemma is ultimately too much for her.

Grey’s Anatomy manages to provide a compelling explanation for Caterina Scorsone’s exit in season 22. Given everything that has transpired, it makes sense that Amelia would want to take a vacation. Although she has done so in the past following losses, it would be extremely difficult for her to simply go back to work after what happened to Natalie. However, Amelia’s sabbatical also has an off-screen explanation. The minimum number of episodes that veteran cast members can appear in on Grey’s Anatomy has been lowered from 18 to 14 since 2024–2025. This measure will remain in effect for the current season. But according to a TV reporter, Scorsone will only make ten appearances. Scorsone will have to skip eight episodes this season, but Grey’s Anatomy season 22 decides it’s best to do it all at once and finds a good excuse for Amelia’s absence. In any case, this is a more appropriate method of handling Scorsone’s unique arrangement with this year’s medical drama.

It’s disappointing to lose Amelia for a few weeks, especially after she and Maggie reunited. This is in spite of the compelling narrative justification for her departure. The good news is that her return has been confirmed, and a provisional date has been set for it. Amelia will return when Grey’s Anatomy returns in the middle of the 2026 season, but Scorsone will be absent for the next eight episodes. The question now is whether ABC will take a long winter break like it did the year before. To put things in perspective, television programs such as Grey’s Anatomy, 9-1-1, and the brief Doctor Odyssey took a mid-season break in November 2024 and didn’t return for new episodes until March of the following year. ABC hasn’t made any announcements regarding the remaining scripted series, but it has spared The Rookie and Will Trent from this schedule by moving them to a 2026 premiere.

We should cross our fingers and hope that there are many new directions to take things because we are aware that the season is still very early. It would be fantastic if there were several surprises by the time the finale drew near. Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 3 will be released on Thursday, 23 October 2025.
