Downtown is a romantic indie rock/pop love song about dancing with your lover at night. “Downtown” is a fantasy land — a place far from reality, where you and your soul mate exist only for each other. Milk Jennings wanted the romance expressed in Downtown to be “cliched” because the song was inspired by a person’s frustration and alienation in their intimate relationships. He yearns for those sweet and simple romances and intimacy, but has no energy to make them happen.
