In this episode of Witness Talk, we sit with Dr. Sevjan Al Shami, a Palestinian mathematician whose family’s story spans three generations of displacement. Born in Cyprus to a father expelled from Jaffa in 1948, Dr. Al Shami has spent her life in Gaza, teaching mathematics at the Islamic University, building a home, raising a family. But on October 7th, everything changed.
She recounts the sound of over a thousand rockets at dawn, the relentless bombing that shattered every window in her house, the nights spent sheltering as neighborhoods vanished around her.
She speaks of her brother, found buried under rubble months later. Of her five-year-old grandniece, killed on the road to safety. Of a house that stood for 28 years, now burned and hollow.
